Jason Phelps is a blogger with many talents. Not only does he write about wine, food, and yes – beer, he actually makes some of his own hooch to keep things interesting. His blog, Ancient Fire Wines, bring new idea in food and drink to his readers from New Hampshire, his home base. Jason has been writing since 2008, so we look forward to having him join us at the Wine Bloggers Conference to bring his perspective as both a home winemaker and a blogger.

Anheuser-Busch begins push against Stone Bill
In news that’s not at all surprising, Anheuser-Busch has begun a heavy push against the so-called Stone Bill, writing a letter to state senators and urging them to strike down the amendment aimed at creating more jobs and expanding the state’s craft beer industry.
In a letter sent to South Carolina senators, Attorney Amanda K. Wuenscher of Columbia-based Mike Daniel & Associates argues a myriad of issues against the legislation, including that its passage “erodes the current three tier system for alcohol distribution,” would give an unfair advantage to small brewpubs and breweries and was written too hastily and flippantly to be taken seriously. Beer for Biofuels
Algae-based biofuels offer a potential solution to many of the concerns related to corn-based biofuels in the United States, including the food-versus-fuel debate. In Colorado, Superior Ecotech has developed technology that grows algae using the carbon dioxide released through brewing beer. The team’s hoped to use their algae oils to produce cost-effective and sustainable biofuels. After winning the University of Colorado’s Cleantech New Venture Challenge, this student team will compete in the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Clean Energy Business Plan Competition in June.
